Fit & Care

Wear it. Then
look after it.

How to size a Civilianaire garment, how to measure a pair you already own, and how to keep everything for the long run.

How to measure

Lay the garment flat. Measure across, not around. For jeans: waistband edge to edge, front rise from crotch seam to top of waistband, inseam along the inside leg from crotch to hem, thigh 1 inch below the crotch, leg opening at the hem.

Every product page publishes these measurements in inches, per size.

Sizing guidance

  • Raw denim: size down half; the cloth relaxes with wear.
  • Washed denim: size to your everyday fit.
  • Shirting: our shirts run true; go up one for a relaxed fit.
  • Outerwear: patterned to layer over a shirt or heavy tee.

Care by fabric

Raw denim
Wear for six months before the first wash. Turn inside out, wash cold, hang dry. Do not dry-clean.
Washed denim
Cold wash inside-out with like colors, tumble low or hang. Every wash softens the hand.
Cotton shirting
Cold wash, tumble low, iron warm. Expect a small first-wash shrinkage in unsanforized cloth.
Slub jersey tees
Cold wash inside-out, hang dry to preserve texture. Occasional low tumble is fine.
Outerwear
Spot clean when possible. Wet-clean if needed; avoid dry-cleaning waxed or garment-dyed pieces.
Hardware & labels
Brass and copper will patina; leather patches will darken. That's the point.
